Syria-Turkey: The children’s view
Thousands of Syrians have fled the fighting in their country to make a temporary home in camps just over the border in Turkey. For hundreds of families, that means a tented village in Boynuyogun which has established a mosque, a hospital and a school. The United Nations estimates that nearly a quarter of a million people have been forced to leave their homes by the violence in Syria. It also estimates more than 8,000 people have been killed. Among that number, at least 400 children are thought to have been killed. The UN’s children’s agency UNICEF has said it has reports of youngsters being arrested and tortured. A teacher at the Boynuyogun camp said: “What we do here is reflected in their drawing very positively. They don’t only draw about war, but what we do here too. But there are hints in their games of what they’ve been through, and we’re doing our best to deal with that.” Here, the youngsters have a chance to express what they have experienced over the past 12 months. Many choose to do so by putting pencil to paper. The teachers say the younger ones tend not to dwell on the violence but the older children depict guns and tanks, as well as the leader the opposition want to unseat. Our correspondent at the camp Bora Bayraktar said: “The hearts of these refugees are still in Syria.
